Eye Health for Children
Your Child's First Eye Examination
To have your child's vision tested at an early age is recommended by all optometrists in order to achieve the best eye health possible. You should not wait until your child report visual issues as it is easier to correct their visual skills before reaching full development. Good vision is very important for them as they learn through their eyes. Visual defects can be easily treated in children below the age of 5. So, parents are recommended to schedule consistent eye examinations.
How do I know if my child is experiencing vision issues?
Be aware if they portray any of the following behavior:
- Twisting or tilting of the head to favour one eye
- Reoccurring headaches and dizziness
- Hold books unusually close to face while reading
- Difficulty estimating distance accurately (often bumping into objects)
- Frequent blinking or rubbing of eyes
- Eyes looking in different directions
- Blurred or double visions
- Squinting
Vision Conditions in Children
The following eye health conditions are quite common in children:
- Near and Far sightedness
- Strabismus (crossed eyes)
- Amblyopia (decreased sight)
- Eye Allergies
- Eye inquiries
- Blocked tear ducts
- Pink eye
UV Protection
Children, like adults, need sun protection as they are also exposed to harmful UV Rays that damages their eyes. Children experience higher eye health risks as the lens in their eye does not filter as much UV light.
